Captain America is a fictional character that appears in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, the character first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 in March 1941. He was designed as a patriotic supersoldier who fought the Axis powers during World War II and was the most popular character from Timely Comics during that time. The Captain America comic was discontinued in 1950 but was revived briefly in 1953. Marvel Comics brought back the character in 1964, and Captain America has been in publication ever since.
